The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers women's tennis team will be traveling to Drake University, in Des Moines, Iowa, for the first tournament of the fall season at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The format for singles matches will be two out of three sets with a 10 point tiebreaker for the third. The format for doubles matches will be one set, no-ad scoring with a tiebreaker at 6-6. The tournament will run from Friday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. until Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
Nine schools will be competing with Minnesota in the tournament. The other participating schools are Augustana (SD), Creighton, Drake, North Dakota, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Nebraska-Omaha, South Dakota, and Upper Iowa.
The Gophers will send three participants to Des Moines. Cammy Frei, Kalyssa Hall and Karyna Bihel will all make the trip down to take part in the first action of the season. Frei and Bihel will pair up at the event.
Last season, Cammy Frei had a solid fall. She went 9-6 in singles play, and 16-6 in doubles. As one of the best doubles players for the Gophers last season, Frei won seven doubles matches at the 2016 Gopher Invitational, and four more at the ITA Central Region Championships with senior Caroline Ryba.
In 2016, Kalyssa Hall finished with a 6-7 singles record in the fall, and a 6-6 record in doubles play. She won her final three matches to finish off the fall season at the Kitty Harrison Invite.
Karyna Bihel finished last fall with a 6-6 singles record, and a 4-6 record in doubles. She won her first collegiate victory at the Gopher Invitational, and won two matches at both the Florida Gulf Coast University Fall Tournament and the ITA Central Regional Championships.
